What’s the Point of Owning a Business If You Miss This?

Sunday Funday. There I was, standing ringside, watching Littlest Duck on a horse, surrounded by a world I knew absolutely NOTHING about a few years ago. And I had one of those moments. You know the ones where everything gets quiet in your head for half a second and you suddenly realize...

Oh.

THIS is why I did all of it.

This is why I started my own business.

Not so I could work every waking hour, constantly chase the next goal, or build something impressive while missing the life happening right in front of me. I wanted the freedom to flex my schedule, be at all the things, and support my kiddos wherever their hearts led them. And, preferably, build a business successful enough to pay for all those things too.

I think that is something I have to remind myself of sometimes. Since I was a child, I have had this drive of doing more, earning my keep, and fixing things. I see the problem, I want to understand it, and then I want to figure out how to fix it. There is always more to do and more to become. I constantly am thinking of starting another business idea, knowing I have another system to improve, or another thing I could learn. But today, at this moment, I was reminded that just because I can see the next thing doesn’t mean I always need to chase it.

Sometimes success looks like a Sunday spent watching your kid do something she loves.

Littlest Duck is taking our whole family into completely new territory. We were a soccer family. The boys started playing soccer when they were four years old, and for years, soccer fields were just part of our family life. None of us knew anything about horses. I knew they walked on four feet. That’s about it.

But here we are.

We’re learning the horses, the terminology, the early mornings, the training, and an entirely different world because this is where her heart is leading her. And I get to be here for it. Not watching through pictures someone sends me. Not constantly checking my phone because work needs me. Actually here, learning alongside her and cheering her on. Becoming a horse mom instead of a soccer mom.

Running a business is about so much more than revenue, growth, employees, goals, and the next milestone. Those things matter. Obviously, the business has to make money. But the money and freedom are supposed to mean actually being present for your family and children.

And on a random Sunday in September, with a horse I never expected to know anything about, my brain filled with joy that this is what life is about. What a gift that my daughter is finding something she loves. And that I have a business that gives me the flexibility to be standing right there while she does it.

I almost forgot that was the whole point. I am so glad I was reminded.
